The Complete Guide to Edge Computing for 2020

Edge Computing

Edge computing is an advanced technology that can give you a better browsing experience, excellent online gaming experience. When it combines with 5g technology, it can change millions of user experience. New technology, which required real-time computing power, and lots of IoT devices, need an edge-computing system for their better performance. Real-time applications such as 8k video processing and humanoid robots, self-driving cars, artificial intelligence, and online gaming. These are the technology which required edge computing power for better performance. MIT design a new 3D chip in 2017, which may be the key to this technology type. Usually, silicon-based chip fabrication works with 2d structure only. Still, MIT researchers have developed a new 3D fabrication method that uses RRAM and carbon nanotube to make a combined nanoelectronic processor design, and it supports 3D architecture.

What is edge computing?

In simple words, we can say edge computing is a type of computer program which deliver very low latency and bandwidth nearer to the requests. Edge computing runs a few cloud processes and provides those processed data to the user’s computer or IoT devices. It minimizes the long-distance communication that has to happen between your computer(client) and server.

This type of service is just the advanced version of cloud computing service. As cloud computing is now available every ware, big companies like Google, Microsoft, Apple, and IBM are prepared to update from cloud to edge. Before going into detail about this technology, you need to know some basics about cloud computing.

You have storage in your laptop, desktop, and on your phone, right. So how much storage do you have 1gb, 10gb, or 1tb? It really doesn’t matter how much storage you have; that storage will full one day, and what do you do after that? Usually, people buy more storage. But why? when you have a system like cold storage, there is no more storage required on your computer. A typical example of could storage is dropbox and google photos.

Why we need Edge technology?

When we have cloud computing like services, then why we need to update it, right.

We have an advanced cloud computing service, but we show some data fetching delay with server and client.

When we play online videos, we face some buffering problems, and when we browse something, it takes some time to show us.

Altho this time is deficient, but the edge can remove that time barrier.

But companies like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Apple don’t want even that delay for their client.

In the future, we all gonna witness online heigh quality video gaming. We can able to play video games without even downloading that game.

We can watch 8k videos online, maybe on youtube with an edge computing system. Anything could be possible tomorrow. We don’t know where we are going in the tech world.

Just imagine in the future, devices in manufacturing factory-controlled with edge computing or internet-connected security camera that send you video footage from remote areas.

While a single device can work better than multiple devices nowadays.

When the number of devices started sharing data simultaneously, then not only did quality suffer due to latency, but the costs in bandwidth can be very high.

These services can resolve this problem. Edge devices can integrate with many different devices, such as IoT devices, an employee’s computer software, smartphone, or security camera.

What is the difference between cloud and edge computing

According to CISCO, they have 14.1ZB of cloud data by 2020. Cloud computing is all about making use of data by centralizing the storage area.

Cloud computing is an excellent solution to storage problems nowadays.

But it also has some disadvantages. When many devices share data simultaneously, cloud systems slow down and can’t work efficiently.

This is where edge computing differs from the cloud computing system.

As edge computing follows an entirely different approach, it moves the processing away from the centralized servers and closer to the last user.

This technology is swetable over cloud computing in remote areas.

In remote areas, there is limited or even no connectivity of a centralized storage system. These locations need localized storage or a mini data center with these service systems.

Edge computing and cloud computing are two completely different technologies, and they can’t replace each other.

Privacy and security

With the increasing use of technology, it is essential to be secure, and our data must be safe. According to some reports, by 2025, the use of smart devices drastically increases. So in this internet era, we have to be secure our data from frauds.

Data can be annoying from a security standpoint, mostly when data is operated by different devices that might not secure compared to centralized or cloud-based systems.

As the number of Internet of Things(IoT) devices increases, it is essential to understand the possible security issues around these devices.

This includes ensuring that the data is totally encrypted and that the correct access-control methods and even VPN tunneling are used.

This systems may also be resource-constrained devices, limiting the choice in the security method.

Pros and cons of edge computing

Pros of this technology

According to Jason Anderson (vice president of Business Line Management at startup Technologies), “Edge computing saves time and resources in the maintenance of operations by collecting and analyzing data in real-time. Networks on edge give real-time analytics that helps to optimize performance and increase productivity”.

Kyle Bernhardy, CTO at HarperDB, also said something about edge computing. One major benefit to this technology is that data is not transferred, making the edge more secure. “This computing service contains all data and processing on the device that initially created it”

Cons of this technology

According to Chris Nelson( Vice President of Engineering at OSIsoft ), hanging a balance between keeping data at the edge and bringing it into a central cloud when necessary.

“Companies might suffer to understand the balance between delivering information to the cloud and process it at the edge. In terms of money, it’s more practical to analyze data regionally. However, in some cases, data may need to process in the cloud,” Nelson said.
